Maximum allowed fluoride in water supply:

0.8 mg/litre

What is it?

Fluoride compounds are salts that form naturally when fluoride combines with minerals in soil and rocks.  They may also be formed as a by-product of many industrial processes. Fluoride has a unique position in relation to other chemical because it intentionally added to the water system in Ireland. Hexafluorophosphoric acid (F6HP) is added to the water supply in Ireland and multiple other countries for public health reasons.  Fluoride is added to the water in Ireland in a bid to improve the dental health of the country. Fluoride is said to reduce cavities and dental bacteria so as a result the government resolved to begin adding it to the water supply in a bid to reduce the amount of those seeking dental care.

How does it get into water?

Most of the fluoride one would see in the water supply is added by the council at municipal water treatment centres. It may get into the water by other means however. Fluoride can get into the water naturally through minerals in the ground. In general fluoride concentration in surface water sources will be generally low, however concentrations in ground water sources, especially wells with a deep borehole, may be significantly higher.

Does it pose a risk to health?

It is widely accepted that fluoride is good for teeth and prevents cavities at the level which it is put into drinking water. It is said that raised levels of fluoride may lead to mild dental fluorosis in some people.

Fluoride is a controversial topic in many of the countries that put it in their water with many stating that it causes a variety of serious health issues. These arguments however, remain unfounded.

How do I check the level of Fluoride in my water?

If your water is fluoridated, your city council should be able to provide you with up to date measurements. If not, or if you would like an independent measurement, you can get a test with an accurate reading here.

Can I remove the fluoride from my water?

Fluoride can be removed from your water if you are willing to install either an ion exchange system, a reverse osmosis system or an ultra-filtration system in your house.
