The summer is nearly upon us; as a result it is now ever more important to make sure your water intake is at a high level.  Drinking the requisite amount of water each day gives you a large amount of health benefits, while it has been shown that not drinking enough water can be detrimental to one’s health.  Although everyone is different and our bodies have different requirements, the general guideline is that every adult should drink 8 eight ounce glasses of water each day. This equals about two litres.

Drinking the full two litres every day can be a challenge for some people however, especially those who habitually drink fizzy drinks or juices instead. As a result we have laid out 5 easy ways you can use to increase your daily water intake.

1-Add flavour to your water:

Adding fruit, vegetables or herbs to your water will not only add a significant amount of flavour to your water, but you are also getting the health benefits of these additional components too . For best results add a large amount of water to a container before adding your additional flavours and let the water sit for an extended period of time. This leaves enough time for all the flavours to seep into the water.  There are so many options you can try as well, either opting for the anti-oxidising benefits of adding cucumber or the added vitamins and breath freshening power of lemon.

2- Dilute your sweet drinks with water

Many drinks like ice tea and lemonade can come with an overpowering sweetness to them. Why not add some water and ice to the drink? Not only may this improve the flavour and increase your water intake, but it also gives you more of the sweet drink to enjoy.

3- Eat water rich foods

Some of the most water rich foods include cucumber (96% water), zucchini (95% water), watermelon (92% water), and grapefruit (91% water). Why not incorporate more of these into your diet as you increase your water intake without even realising it. These are also very good for anyone trying to lose weight as they make you feel full all the while having a very low calorific value.

4 have a glass first thing in the morning

Yes, even before your morning cup of coffee. Having a glass of water first thig in the morning flushes all of the harmful toxins that have built up overnight out of your body. Having a glass of water first thing in the morning also speeds up your metabolism and improves skin and hair health.

If you make a habit of this it is a sure-fire way to increase your daily water intake.

5 invest in a water bottle to carry around with you

Have you ever been thirsty out in public and A) either not had change for a bottle of water or B) couldn’t find a shop? This tip has too many benefits. First and foremost when you carry a water bottle around with you, you are more than likely going to drink a lot more water. Other benefits of this however , include saving money from buying drinks on the go and also very importantly you are not using any single use plastic bottles and helping save the environment.
