The filtration process in sand filters is used for water treatment purposes for reuse or industrial dumping. Its purpose is to percolate the water through several layers of sand, starting from the finest granulometry to a final layer of coarse gravel, while the retention of particulates and sediments occurs in the sand granules and the water goes to the bottom of the filter increasingly free of incorporated substances. This is a very effective method when used for industrial purposes. However, a periodic analysis is recommended in order to verify its efficiency as the continuous use and the type of matter incorporated in the water will cause the saturation of this filter. When the inefficacy of the process is verified, cleaning is recommended as well as the exchange of layers of sand.
